Pregnancy, Abortion, and the Catholic Church Make for a Great Mystery

Mercer Island, WA (PRWeb) January 2, 2007 -- Michael W. Sherer has written several novels to date, but is most well known for his highly acclaimed Emerson Ward Mystery Series. The latest episode, and fifth in the series, "Death is No Bargain" (Five Star Publishing, 2006, ISBN 1594143684), witnesses a maturing Emerson as he struggles with a personal crisis that coincidently begins to parallel the latest murder he is compelled to solve.

Chivalrous by nature and always willing to stand up for the underdog, Emerson didn't think twice about helping a disoriented girl he discovered on the beach. Taking her to his house to recover, he eventually convinces her to make her way home. Fast forward a year and the young girl's raging father appears on Emerson's doorstep, accusing him of seducing his daughter and helping her run away. Emerson barely makes it out of the conversation with this life.

Already grappling with news of his own girlfriend's unexpected pregnancy, Emerson reluctantly finds himself drawn into the unfolding dilemma as the young girl's mother pleads with him to help find her daughter Ellen. When reports of a body found in a rural area north of the city fitting Ellen's description turn up, Emerson does a little investigating. He learns that Ellen was pregnant, and with a convent that takes in unwed mothers-to-be located near the death scene, suspicion sets in.

Driven by a huge amount of internal conflict with the impending decision regarding his own baby, Emerson feels a deepening need to discover what happened to Ellen. He recognizes the quickly paralleling circumstances, and sets off to uncover the mystery, and possibly find what is in his own heart. Going undercover at the convent, Emerson is soon embroiled in a twisting and turning mystery that eventually leads to a violent encounter at an abortion clinic and a strange web of deception with roots in the Catholic Church.

Sherer has possibly written his most controversial installment to date. With his signature blend of intelligent storytelling that reveals the evolution of his recurring characters with an unfolding "whodunit," lovers of the more soft-boiled murder/mystery novel will be thrilled with "Death is no Bargain."
